Macondo represent our individual and collective life journeys. Gabriel Garcia Marquez displays the human condition in unprecedented ways, adding mystical and cultural elements, with the mastery of story telling. |
When One Hundred Years of Solitude entered my life.In 2006, I was working at a children's home in a town the size of Long Beach, California, nestled in the heart of Peru's Amazon jungle. Iquitos, the town, was only accessible by either plane or a 48-hour boat ride.
A coworker recommended I read "One Hundred Years of Solitude," a legendary book by South America's most celebrated author. After just one page, I set it aside. The fictional and imaginary world of Macondo was beyond my comprehension and interest. Instead, I turned to "Chronicle of a Death Foretold," which was slightly more accessible while still showcasing the author's storytelling mastery. It was good. Encouraged, I gave "One Hundred Years of Solitude" another try. This time, I finished it, but I was still lost in the stream of events whose historical relevance eluded me. After eight months in Peru, my travels took me to the Colombian Caribbean. Nearly a year into my stay there, friends invited me to Aracataca for a Book Day celebration. That day, seeing history come to life, the book started to make sense. I learned that García Márquez's home and its surroundings were witnesses to many events that shaped the country and the world at-large—events that rooted "One Hundred Years of Solitude" in reality. Realizing this, I began to see beyond the magic and cultural misunderstandings, the need for love, the expressions of life and the pursuit of our desires and dreams. Through Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the history and characters of this little town and its surroundings became a soothing blanket for millions of readers around the world, giving us faith that our dreams are not so crazy when our journeys are shared. By finding connection among us, our imagination becomes infinite, enabling us to create communities and civilizations as powerful expressions of our humanity. This book teaches us that sharing the trials and tribulations of families, friends, and beyond magnifies our intellectual, emotional, and energetic powers. Through this shared experience, we learn to express our humanity and discover the resilience and hope that one day will shape a brighter future for all. Tim Buendia |
